The Triple U Ranch was purchased in 1959. We bought the first buffalo soon after. We have 50,000 acres with about 2000 buffalo roaming on the prairie. This is natural grassland that has never been broken. The prairie is virtually as it was two hundred years ago when Lewis and Clark traveled this way on their trip west.
The ranch and the buffalo herd have been featured in many commercials and film documentaries worldwide. Much of the award-winning movie "Dances With Wolves" was filmed on the ranch, including Fort Sedgewick and the buffalo hunt. The prairie and the buffalo became world famous for their role in this epic film.
The buffalo are a closed herd so they are the best of the best. The herd bulls often will wiegh 1800-2000 pounds. We sort the buffalo every year and only keep the very best size and quality animals. We have a very strict culling program to insure the quality or our animals.
Roy and Nellie Houck were the founders of this ranch and it has always been a family operation. The ranch is located in central South Dakota near Lake Oahe. The entrance is 31 miles northwest of Fort Pierre on Highway 1806 at mile marker 217. The ranch entrance is marked with a big archway. Headquarters are four miles west.
